|Helen Rhodes Southerly, age 89, of Moorefield, WV, passed this life on
Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the E.A. Hawse Rehabilitation Center in Baker,
WV. Born November 23, 1926 in Harrisonburg, VA, she was the daughter of
the late Alfred F. Rhodes, Sr. and Bertha Shadwell Rhodes.
Helen graduated from Dayton High School in 1943 and Rockingham Memorial
Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She worked at the hospital until 1952
and on December 21, 1952, she married Walter Southerly. The lived in
Petersburg, WV, Gloucester Court House, VA, Winchester, VA, and finally
settled in Moorefield, WV. She loved her family, church, and nursing. Along
the way, Helen worked in nursing at the Winchester and Petersburg
Hospitals, as well as different doctor’s offices in Moorefield. She was the
first Occupational Nurse in Hardy County, working at American Woodmark
Corp. for almost 13 years before retiring.
She was an active member of the Duffey United Methodist Church, where
she participated in the Duffey Adult Bible Class and on the Administrative
Board. Helen also had served as the Financial Secretary, Membership
Secretary, and on the Pastor/Staff Relations Committee and Nominating
Committee. She volunteered with the church office for many years. More
recently, Helen attended Moorefield Church of the Brethren.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband,
Charles Walter “Sud” Southerly; three brothers, James N. Rhodes, Richard
L. Rhodes, and Alfred F. Rhodes, Jr.; and three sisters, Edith Rhodes
Chandler, JoAnn Rhodes, and Mildred Ricedorf. She is survived by two
sons, C.W. Southerly, II and William R. “Bill” Southerly and his wife,
Melinda, both of Morgantown, WV; two sisters, Jean Armentrout of
Harrisonburg, VA and Ann Coakley of Mt. Clinton , VA; and one grandson,
Guy Douglas Southerly.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Monday, April 18, 2016 at
Elmore Funeral Home in Moorefield, WV. A funeral service will be held at
11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at the funeral home with Pastors Russell
and Lucy Webster and Danny Sterns. Burial will follow in Olivet Cemetery,
Moorefield WV. Memorial Donations may be made to the Burlington’s
Children’s Home, RR 3, Box 3122, Keyser, WV 26726 or the St. Jude
Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
